“Only… if you answer one question for me first.”

She froze. “Ask, just ask.”

He leaned slightly towards her so that their eyes were on the same level.

“Would you still love me?” he asked, “if you knew I was not just some man on the street… but a man with a past who could destroy everything you have built?”

Her eyes widened.

“What do you mean?”

Jonah straightened up, his voice soft, almost hoarse.

“Because I wasn’t always homeless. I had a name that the media whispered about in courtrooms.”

Ethan Walker stood there in stunned silence, his worn-out little car in his hand. The red paint was peeling, the wheels were wobbly, and yet it was more valuable than any luxury he possessed.

“No,” he finally said, kneeling before the twins. “I can’t bear to look at this. This should belong to both of you.”

One of the boys, his large, tear-filled brown eyes whispered, “But we need money to buy medicine for Mom. Sir…”

Ethan’s heart sank with pain.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“My name is Leo,” said the older twin. “And his name is Liam.”

“What’s your mother’s name?” “Amy,” Leo replied. “She’s very sick. The medicine is too expensive.”

Ethan looked at them one by one. They were only six years old. Yet here they stood, in the cold wind, selling their only toy—alone.

His voice softened. “Take me to her.”

They were hesitant at first, but something in Ethan’s tone gave them confidence. They nodded.

He followed the boys through narrow streets until they reached a dilapidated apartment building. He climbed a dilapidated staircase to a small room where a woman lay, pale and unconscious, on a rotting sofa. The room was dimly heated. Her frail body was covered with a thin blanket.

Ethan took out his phone and immediately called his family doctor.

“Send an ambulance to this address. And prepare the entire team. I want her admitted to my private clinic.”

He hung up and knelt next to the woman. Her breathing was shallow.

The twins looked at him with wide eyes.

“Is Mom going to die?” Liam blurted out.
